Carlotta Mattia (nee Palmieri)
Carlotta Palmieri Mattia (1885 - 1923) was born in Leoni, Italy and came to Newark, NJ with her mother and two younger brothers in 1905. In 1907, she married Angelo Maria Mattia (1889 - 1946) and bore two sons, Peter B in 1909 and Homer T in 1914. Her untimely death was caused by a botched minor surgery. We believe this hand-tinted photograph was taken in the Mattia Brothers Studio in Newark, NJ. Original is in family archives; a print is at the Museum of the Old First Ward, in Newark, NJ.

Carlotta Palmieri Mattia (1885 - 1923) married Angelo Maria Mattia (1889 - 1946). Their first son was Peter Burnett Mattia (1909 - 1933). We believe this photograph was created on the occasion of Peter’s Baptism, and was taken by his grandfather, Newark photographer Petrino B. Mattia (1869 - 1953). Original is in family archives; a print is at the Museum of the Old First Ward, in Newark, NJ.

In this photo in front of a popular Newark “watering hole” she is joking with her brother-in-law Edwin Strouse, who was the husband of Angelo’s sister Flora Mattia … and an unidentified woman.
