Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center

The Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center (New Jersey Room) is a research-level collection of materials relating to New Jersey, Essex County and Newark. It includes both historical and current information in these formats: books, newspapers, documents, pictures and archives. Most of our collections have not been digitized, however, selections from dozens of collections are available below.

Ironbound Community Corporation Collection
The Ironbound Community Corporation (ICC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1969 that has provided services for families, seniors, and students, and has done organizing work on issues like housing, environmental justice, education, and health since the 1970s. In 2016, ICC sponsored an Ironbound History Day.

Wynona M. Lipman Papers
State Senator Wynona M. Lipman became the first African-American woman to be elected to the New Jersey Senate in 1971. This digital collection contains a selection of items from the Wynona Lipman Collection at the library. There are photographs, letters to and from various Newark groups, and more!
William M. Ashby Collection & Papers
This collection contains a selection of materials from distinguished Newark citizen William Ashby who lived to 101. Mr. Ashby worked for the Urban League.
Tri City Peoples Organization for Progress Collection
This collection consists of minutes, reports, fliers and other documents from the community organization: Tri-City Citizens Union for Progress (the majority of the paper collection: MG Nwk TCCUP). Tri-City was founded in 1966 to work in Jersey City, Newark and Paterson and continues to be active in Newark today!
Tiny Prince Collection
Carl Brinson was the publisher, writer, and editor of many Newark nightlife publications. In 1949, Brinson founded Trend Publishing Co. (later Trend Publishing Associates) which published Trend Magazine (he served as editor), After Hours Magazine (he served as editor), Gospel News, and Black Mirror News (he served as a consultant).
Stanley B. Winters Scrapbooks & Papers
Stanley Winters was an activist and founder of the Clinton Hill Neighborhood Council in Clinton Hill neighborhood. He worked on the issues of urban renewal, civil rights, housing, employment and education.
Sharpe James Photograph Collection
This is a small collection of digital photos of Mayor Sharpe James donated to the library by the City of Newark. The photos show the Mayor at various events around the city.
Roy E. Norris Collection
This collection contains a selection from Roy Norris and his work with the New Jersey Urban League.
Pamela E. Goldstein Collection
Pamela Goldstein was director of the Office of Public Information under Mayor Sharpe James. Much of the material is press releases.
Newark and New Jersey Broadsides Collection
This collection consists of broadsides / fliers about Newark and New Jersey.
Newark Then And Now
This collections consists of images of Newark in 1916 and 2016, side by side.
Newark School Photograph Collection
Newark School Photographs, originally a Newark Board of Education collection, consists of four drawers of small-format photographs. Most are 3" x 5" black and white prints. The bulk of the photographs date from the 1940s to 1960s, with some earlier photos.
Newark Posters Collection
A collection of Newark-related posters including exhibit posters, political posters, anniversary posters and posters of the Newark Black Film Festival.
Newark Police Department Collection & Newark Police Records
This collection consists of items about, or published by, the Newark Police Department. It includes arrest records and various other documents.
Newark Picture Collection
A selection of photographs from the General Collection of the Charles F. Cummings New Jersey Information Center at the Newark Public Library.
